Story Behind the Photo(s):  2008-2009.  Nathan’s CEO, Eric Gatoff came to me with an idea after having seen some of my earlier works posted on facebook – document (shoot) Coney Island to furnish the walls for their new corporate headquarters.  After a great meeting where I presented what I can do and what the space can look like, the job was won.  Over the course of the year to follow, I shot all I could possibly have seen of Coney Island – about the amount of time they had to have the completed series shot and to print on (or about) their move-in date.

Below, all the selects we thought would work best between me and the powers that be and ultimately Gatoff, Wayne Norbitz (President), and Don Schedler (VP, Architecture).  Additionally, Nathan’s decided that an installation of ALL of the roughly 500 final images I submitted would be featured as an installation on 4 LCD screens located in the reception area.  Dynamic.  Here are images from the body work.

All of these images are printed in sizes ranging from 24×32 – 48×60 on my signature giclee and gracing the walls throughout the Nathan’s HQ’s.

Story Behind the Photos:  Sunset Beach, Long Island – Summer, 2010.  A scorching hot July day didn’t deter this champagne drinking, petanque playing beautiful crowd from showing up on several bus-loads en route from Manhattan.  It also didn’t stop me from snapping upwards of 1,000 images of the days happenings.  I must have dropped 5 pounds in water weight while occasionally sipping from a flute here and there and downing what seemed like gallons of water.  The best part of the day?  On my way out, my lovely client Christina hands me two bottles of Veuve Clicquot – her way of saying “thanks for the hard work!”.

Story Behind the Photo:  New York City’s Meatpacking District, circa 2009.  One of my favorite parts of Manhattan, known for its displays of art on its building walls, incredible restaurants and high-end shops – I’ve shot some of my favorite images here.  The best part about its art?  You never know what you’re gonna find.  On this day, my canvas was filled with pop art posters and as always, my camera was my paint brush.  Here are a few from the series.

Story Behind the Photo:  Chris Gavagan, Director – Coached in to Silence interviews Don Yaeger, New York Times best selling author and former Sports Illustrated Editor and co-writer of Sports Illustrated cover article Every Parents Nightmare, talking about “the child molester finding a home in the world of youth sports, where as a coach he can gain the trust and loyalty of kids—and then prey on them”.

Chris had been working diligently to set this interview up for Coached in to Silence which deals with the topic. Initially, we were to travel to Yaeger’s Florida headquarters but with the news he’d be in New York City, he was happy to make time for this.  The interview took place at New York’s Radisson Hotel (midtown). 

While also the Director of Photography for this interview and with the video camera in locked position, I grabbed my Canon 5D Mark II, moved to the other side of the table to catch a glimpse of the seriousness of Chris’ question in mid-verse for some stills.  It was intense.  And the end-result captivating.

Story Behind the Photo:  Chicago, 2009.  Shot during a trip for a Strategic Group party for Kanye West where we took in a show and got together with old friend, former boss and President of Artisan Talent, Bejan Douraghy.  We were out taking in some sites with Bejan and came across Chicago’s Bean located around the block from his apartment. 

Shot from the left side of the bean – a small portion of it – I loved how the buildings reflected off of this almost completely rounded object producing a feel of elasticity.

Story Behind the Photo: Shot roughly 1 week prior to its very first opening day, this picture of the new Yankee Stadium is now a staple in my New York series.  I wanted to capture it before the season started to ensure there were no crowds present along with its newness.  The helicopter on the top right?  Luck.  No superimposing.  Sold as a print on giclee on the Yale Gurney Marketplace and always drawing serious interest from online memorabilia stores like Steiner Sports – for fellow Yankee fans, it’s a top seller.

Early in my career, I worked on many productions but never as a photographer (way before the thought even entered my mind).  This, was my first commercial shoot as a professional circa 2006.  Director Thor Raxlen of Lair (pictured below) and his initial production company, GuerillaFX asked me to shoot b-roll for their Hyundai client, here are 2 images from it. The second pictured was the very first shot I snapped.

My commercial stills (also known as unit photography) have several purposes but are used mostly for marketing materials and a daily log for the client.

Title:  “Angel of the Waters”

Story behind the photo:  New York City’s Central Park – a brisk Autumn day, 2010.  In the area doing a shoot for 1in6.org and had some down time.  I noticed the pigeons perched on the statue’s wings, liked the idea of it and its irony, so I snapped a few – some in to the sun (positioned behind the statue to create a silhouette) and some with the sun behind me (in front, revealing the statue’s detail). 

After edit, this was the result and the image I decided to release publicly.  It is now featured on several online stores (in smaller sizes) and printed on my signature giclee (canvas).  This picture will also be available by mid-January 2012 exclusively on the Yale Gurney Marketplace (in large sizes and superior quality).
